Day 5
It was overcast and trying to rain when I awoke at 5am. It remained much the same all day with sunny intervals and the threat of rain without us actually getting wet - though George wore his waterproof jacket all day! Our trek started at Alevkayasi and took us through woodland, where the going was soft on thick pine needles, over high passes and along a high ridge where our feet got hot and sore on the hard bedrock. We clocked up approx 16.5 miles to Gecitkale Pass, losing much of the height we had gained during the day. This height we have to re-gain tomorrow morning (not looking forward to that! I hope it is overcast and cool again). Margaret managed to walk with us all morning as it was cool and her feet are healing. David and Alison dressed up and made signage inviting us to 'Mustapha Bunn's Cafe' at lunchtime, which was very amusing. Several people developed new blisters today including myself and our organiser John Chawner. 5 days down and only 5 to go. One night before we move hotel to the Karpas - then we will really feel we are nearing success.
